Spiritual Gifts or Not

Let us consider the matter of spiritual gifts, particularly those which some may deem sensational. What prompts us to inquire about these gifts? What is the answer that we seek? Do we desire a certain image of God that aligns with our preferences? Do we say to ourselves, "If God does not conform to my expectations, then I shall not commit myself fully to Him. Remove my afflictions, ease my burdens, make me feel good, or else I shall not serve you."

As for the gifts of the Spirit, the so-called "exciting" or "miraculous" ones, such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, or mystical experiences, I do not believe it is worthwhile to engage in endless debates about their present-day validity. Why do some oppose these gifts? Is it due to fear of false teaching or immature Christians? The exact position of scripture on this matter may not be entirely clear, and I believe that it is a subject that requires faith, rather than certainty. However, what is certain from scripture is how the church should respond to false teaching and cultivate the growth of believers.

Let us not be overly preoccupied with these questions that often vex our minds as Christians. We cannot treat God as a vendor, offering him more of ourselves in exchange for specific blessings. Instead, let us approach Him with humility and trust, offering our hearts in love and obedience. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.
